Doyang (Wokha) | June 30 : Minister for Urban Development Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu today dedicated a foundation stone for a government Polythechnic at Temeraktsu, on the banks of the Doyang Hydro Electric Project under Wokha district. In his address, the minister said that the provisional census of 2001 shows the literacy rate in Nagaland at 66.59, which increased to 80.11 %, in 2011 census, a 13.52% improvement in a decade. “That is a tremendous improvement in educational sector though Nagaland is a late starter in education,” he said and expressed confidence that Nagaland will cross 90% in the next census.
With the immense growth in literacy, he said to have felt a need to do something about unemployment in the state. Technical education will create job opportunities, he said, and urged students to opt for professional and technical education.
Liezietsu disclosed that besides the three Polythechnic institutes in Atoizu, Kohima and Mokokchung, Nagaland state has received a sanction to establish 5 more government Polythechnic. Foundation stones have been dedicated in Aboi under Mon district, Chetheba in Phek and another in Temeraktsu under Wokha District (today) while two are reserved for Tuensang and Dimapur districts.
Liezietsu also appealed to the four sitting MLAs representing Wokha district to acquire land to establish Global Open University headquarters at Wokha, so that work can begin soon.
He expressed hope that, with support and coordination, the development would further technical education in Wokha district.
In his brief address, Parliamentary Secretary Y Patton urged landowners not to create ‘too many issues’ and to give development a chance for a healthier economic life in the area. Further, Parliamentary Secretary W Kithan said having no knowledge of technology in the present times ‘has no meaning.’ He expressed hope that the institution would shine in the field of technology not only in Wokha district but across the state and country as well.
Deputy Speaker of Nagaland Legislative Assembly Ralanthung Yanthan expressed gratitude to the minister and DAN government for allotting the institution to Wokha district. Once the institution becomes fully functional, employment opportunities would also rise and on this, he hoped for speedy infrastructural development.
Also speaking during the occasion, the Chairman of the Kyong Hoho, Y Jami, appealed for change in the mindset and attitude “as too many landowners hampers development.”
