Kohima | July 10 : Tea growers in Mon district have all the best reasons to hold their heads high now, with Paramount Tea Industry open in Tizit. Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio inaugurated the factory, which produces ten varieties of tealeaves, on July 8. Neiphiu Rio said industries and factories run by government do not succeed, as the state makes no profit out of it. However, private industries always find the right track’, he said.
Minister School Education Nyeiwang Konyak and Parliamentary Secretary RD & REPA Pangnyu Phom, the proprietors of the Tea factory, pointed out on the long felt need of the people especially the tea growers for establishing a tea factory which would cater to the Naga tea farmers who would now be assured of timely and regular procurement by the tea factory.
Speaking to ‘Morung Express’, Minister for Education Nyeiwang Konyak said tea growers are always in a fix as to how to dispose the produce as market prices decrease during main seasons. This anomaly compels them to sell the tealeaves at throwaway prices and the surplus is wasted.
The minister said the factory would encourage more people to start planting tea trees. The main grid of the factory has the capacity to grind 20,000 kilos of tea leaves per day and this capacity reflects the potential that the factory could be of help, no matter how small, to tea growers in their livelihood. Konyak said tea farmers face problems due to unavailability of a tea factory in the area. While delivering a brief history of the factory, the Minister fervently requested the UG brothers not to disturb the staffs and laborers of the factory.
Tea growers have been suffering for more than two decades. The state government does not have any program for tea growers, no scientific trainings and seminars, no bank facilities in Tizit. The problem is compounded more by the blocked subsidies for tea farmers who have to depend solely on traditional crude practices.
The inauguration of the factory is a welcome development as hopes abound now that it would improve the economic condition of the area’s people.
