NFR steps up safety drive; GM reviews infrastructure and operations on key section

Maligaon, February 21 (MExN): Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), undertook a comprehensive safety inspection of the Kamakhya–New Bongaigaon–Dangtal section on February 20, 2026, as part of the Railways’ sustained efforts to strengthen operational safety and infrastructure reliability. The inspection covered a stretch of 154 kilometres. Senior officials from the Headquarters and the Division accompanied the General Manager during the inspection.

During the inspection, the General Manager carried out a detailed assessment of track conditions, minor and major bridges, signalling and telecommunication systems, traction installations, level crossing gates and station infrastructure along the section. Safety-critical assets, curves, points and crossings, and ongoing maintenance works were closely examined to ensure strict adherence to prescribed safety standards.

He also interacted with railway officials and frontline staff to assess operational preparedness, safety awareness and alertness. The General Manager reviewed the availability and condition of essential safety equipment at stations and work sites.

As part of the inspection programme, detailed station inspections were conducted at Nalbari, Barpeta Road and New Bongaigaon. Developmental works at these stations are being executed with a focus on passenger amenities, station modernisation and overall service quality.

The General Manager also reviewed track behaviour and operational performance during the inspection. He appreciated the efforts of railway staff and assured continued support for strengthening railway services in the region.

Northeast Frontier Railway reiterated its commitment to providing safe, efficient and passenger-friendly rail services, while continuously upgrading infrastructure to meet the growing transportation needs across the Northeast region.

Jagriti Shiksha Niketan marks 50 years of education for underprivileged children

Jagriti Shiksha Niketan, Pandu, a primary school for underprivileged children established in 1975 in the railway settlement of Pandu, celebrated its Annual Day at Rang Bhawan, Maligaon on Wednesday, highlighting five decades of service in education.

The school, which began as a small initiative, now educates over 160 students from Play Group to Class V under the leadership of Shalini Shrivastava, President of Northeast Frontier Railway Women Welfare Organization (NFRWWO). It provides a comprehensive learning environment supported by dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff, focusing on holistic development.

The Annual Day programme was graced by Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway, and Shalini Shrivastava. Students showcased their talents through colourful cultural performances, songs and skits, reflecting their overall growth. The event concluded with interactions between guests, teachers, and students, reaffirming the school’s commitment to empowering underprivileged children.

The school has witnessed significant milestones over its 50-year journey. In 2006, the building was redeveloped, followed by the addition of new classrooms in 2014 and 2017. Most recently, in 2024, a renovated classroom and staff-room complex was constructed, enhancing the learning environment.

Support from the Railways, partner organisations and individuals has been instrumental in the school’s growth. Infrastructure was supported by Northeast Frontier Railway and NFR (Construction), computer facilities were facilitated by Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR), and drinking water facilities were provided by the State Bank of India.

Looking ahead, Jagriti Shiksha Niketan has outlined plans for further development. Proposed expansions include additional rooms for a laboratory, activity and study areas, a new playground to strengthen physical education, a new auditorium for daily activities, and additional toilet facilities to improve hygiene and sanitation.
