Kohima | March 3
On the fourth day of the ongoing agitation by Nagaland Government Teachers’ Association (NGTA) 2010 and 2013 batches, the protest site saw a significant development on March 3. Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Eastern Naga Students’ Federation (ENSF) stepped in to extend their solidarity and assure their support.
Following the intervention and assurance by NSF and ENSF to take up the issue with the government, NGTA decided to temporarily suspend their protest demanding inclusion of its salary components into the state non-plan.
Addressing the gathering, NSF President Mteisuding Heraang expressed disappointment over the government’s silence despite days of protest. Referring to the affected teachers as “sons and daughters” of the federations, he affirmed that the student bodies would not abandon them at this crucial juncture.
“Where the systems are not fine, agitation always takes place,” stated Heraang stated and assured the aggrieved teachers that the federations would take up the matter with “sincerity, commitment and seriousness.”
Nonetheless, he appealed the teachers to maintain professionalism and remember their responsibility towards the student community. “When you are agitating on the streets, you are victimising the students’ community,” he said and requested the teachers to return to their respective schools and classrooms.
ENSF President Nuheymong Yimkhiung in his address affirmed it would not shy away from carrying forward the issue and said ‘had there been any intention to abandon the matter, the federations would not have rejected the meeting minutes placed before them on February 27.’
He assured the teachers that both federations were committed to leaving no stone unturned until justice is delivered. Echoing the NSF’s appeal, he urged them to return to their classrooms in good faith and trust the federations to pursue the matter.
Meanwhile, NGTA President Peihau reiterated that the teachers’ agitation was rooted in the denial of their rightful entitlements. He clarified that the protest was not a request but a demand for what was due.
He reminded and outlined three key demands for inclusion of their salary under the state non-plan head, implementation with effect from April 2026, and written compliance from the concerned authorities.
“They have requested us to call off this agitation as they are going to take up our fight. With the mandate of our members and core committee, we are going to put this agitation on hold,” he informed.
