NIELIT Kohima playing vital role in equipping police officers on cyber crime

Dimapur, April 13 (MExN): NIELIT Kohima has set up the first research and development lab & training facility in cyber forensics in the state sponsored by Ministry of Communication & IT, Department of Electronics & IT, Government of India with the objective to solve cyber crime which is one of the most prevalent crimes these days.

NIELIT, Kohima Deputy Director, Er. Lanuwabang stated in a press release that NIELIT Kohima has helped the Law Enforcement Agency of the Nagaland State to solve and crack the first ever cyber crime reported in Nagaland. It also provides services to various departments and organization especially the Law Enforcement Agency of the state. NIELIT Kohima has planned to train 100 to 150 officials of Law Enforcement Agency in the state. The first batch of the training was conducted at NIELIT Kohima from April 9 to 13, 2012 to the police officials of the state. The main objective of the training is to equip the officials to be well versed with the methodologies, procedures, tools and technology in handling cyber crimes and cyber forensics investigations. 

NIELIT Kohima organised the first ever awareness cum workshop on cyber forensics and cyber crimes for the HOD/AHODS/IT Nodal Officers of the state government and various institutions in 2011. It has also imparted orientation course training to the Superintendants of Police and Unit Commandants of the state which was a structured mandatory course.

The Deputy Director also added that today internet and mobile has become the preferred means of communication. It has made life easier for mankind and is fast becoming a way of life for millions of people and also a way of living because of growing dependence on these machines. Though it offers great benefit to society, it also gives opportunities for crime using new and highly sophisticated technology tools.

Cyber crime is a term used to broadly describe criminal activity in which computers/computer networks are a tool, a target, or a place of criminal activity and include everything from electronic cracking to denial of service attacks, unauthorised access to computer systems data alteration, data destruction, theft of intellectual property. Pornography, threatening e-mails, assuming someone’s identity, sexual harassment, defamation, SPAM and Phishing are some examples where computers are used to commit crime.
