Kohima: The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) today called for a review of the letter written by the Nagaland government and addressed to the National Commission for Women. The letter, christened ‘unrealistic’ by the NMA, states that the situation in Nagaland does not warrant the setting up of a panel of the Commission.

“The Naga Mothers take empowerment of women as one of the approaches to solve the miseries that afflict our Society.” While acknowledging the establishment of a separate department for women the NMA lamented that the government had “forgotten the untold miseries and pains that Naga women go through.”

Justifying on gender equality as the “ultimate measure of humanity” in a release, the influential women’s organization said the Women Department of the State Government could have at least consulted various women organizations/groups before such an “unwanted decision was taken on behalf of the women.”

While stating that the move reflects the poor understanding power of the concerned authority, the release asserted: “Therefore, the Naga Mothers object to the letter written to the National Commission for Women.”
