Kohima, April 26 (MExN): The NNC/FGN, under the leadership of Zhopra Vero, has opposed the proposal by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to establish a mountain radar system at Pfutsero in Chakhesang region, stating that the move is unacceptable without the consent of the Naga people.
In a statement issued by Rali Wali (Kilonser) Vepozo Chuzho, the organisation alleged that the proposal was taken up without consultation and termed it a step towards further militarisation of the region.
The NNC/FGN said the installation, particularly in a populated area, could undermine what it described as the sovereignty and aspirations of the Naga people, and expressed concern over the expansion of military infrastructure in the region.
Referring to past agreements between the Government of India and Naga groups, including the 1964 ceasefire and subsequent talks, the organisation claimed that commitments to resolve the issue through democratic means have not been honoured.
It further alleged that policies pursued in the name of development, law and order and security have led to hardships for the Naga people, and criticised the continued imposition of laws such as the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
The statement said the proposed radar system could transform community spaces into areas of surveillance and create psychological stress among residents, particularly in border areas, while warning that such infrastructure may increase vulnerability.
Calling for wider consultation, the NNC/FGN urged stakeholders to engage in informed dialogue and ensure that decisions of such magnitude are not taken without public consent.
The organisation added that the issue goes beyond a technical installation and relates to the broader direction of Naga society, urging careful consideration of its long-term implications.
