Northeast Games 2024 : Nagaland emerges overall group champions for Taekwondo event

Chumoukedima, March 22 (MExN): The Nagaland Taekwondo team has emerged as the champions with 12 medals (four gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze) of the Taekwondo event held as part of the Northeast Games 2024 here at Sovima Futsal ground. 

It was followed by Manipur in second with four gold, one silver, and 3 bronze of the overall medal tally. Mizoram state is in 3rd position with 3 gold, 4 silver, and two bronze of the table tally. This is the first time, Nagaland have dominated the taekwondo event over the past three edition held for the North East Games. 

The two-day-long championship started on Thursday with seven states: Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland taking part in the championship. The event concluded on Friday evening. 

The Nagaland team performed well on the first day of the event, winning four gold medals but had to settle with 5 silver on the second day of the championship. But the silver medals made the difference to win the overall group championship of the Taekwondo event.

On the second day, Keneilevo Nagi got a silver medal in Under-80 kg, Keyinchingongbe Hega with a silver medal in U-54kg, Bovito Chophy bagged a bronze medal in U-58kg, Boto Chophy settled for a silver medal in U-68 kg for the men’s category. While in the girls’ category, Christina Singh took the bronze medalist in U-40kg, Visazono Sachu got a silver medal in U- 43kg, Dipika Hazarika with a silver medal in 49kg.

On the first day of the championship, N Tenloi. Phom beat Niber Muhurtta Boruah from Assam to take the gold for U-48 kg, in U 51 kg Y. Chandrakumar got the second gold medal for Nagaland against H. Lalfrinfela (Mizoram). While Ankur added the third gold for Nagaland in 74 Kg defeating Kangujam Milan Singh (Manipur). For the girls’ category, Under 57 Kg Mallika Baruah (Nagaland) took the fourth gold for Nagaland and Bindyajairu (Nagaland) with bronze in Girls Under 46 KG event.
