NPCC calls for Amit Shah’s resignation, writes to President

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 27 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has submitted a memorandum to the President of India expressing condemnation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s alleged disparaging remarks about Dr. BR Ambedkar.

The memorandum, signed by MP and NPCC President S. Supongmeren Jamir, Vice President Capt. G.K. Zhimomi, Working President Adv. Khriehu Theunuo, and General Secretary Moa Emchen called for Shah’s immediate dismissal and a public apology.

The controversy stems from a statement made by Amit Shah during a special discussion in Parliament commemorating the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. Shah allegedly made remarks that were perceived as disparaging toward Dr. Ambedkar in an attempt to criticize the opposition. The Congress claims these remarks were not only inappropriate but also a deliberate attempt to trivialize the contributions of one of India’s most respected leaders.

The NPCC described the comments as “extremely distasteful” and an affront to Dr. Ambedkar's towering legacy. “Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to the Indian Constitution, his advocacy for social justice, and his relentless fight for the rights of marginalized communities are unparalleled and sacrosanct. Any attempt to demean his legacy is an attack on the foundation of our nation,” the memorandum stated.

The memorandum criticized the BJP for fostering a political environment that allegedly seeks to dilute the principles of inclusivity, equality, and social justice enshrined in the Constitution. It accused the BJP of attempting to hijack the Constitution’s spirit by introducing amendments and policies that marginalize historically oppressed communities.

The NPCC also highlighted the BJP's opposition to nationwide caste surveys, an initiative proposed by the Congress to shed light on the socio-economic status of marginalized groups. They argued that such opposition reveals the BJP’s reluctance to address systemic inequalities and uplift disadvantaged communities.

Further, the Congress alleged that Shah’s remarks were part of a broader pattern of behavior by BJP leaders who, they claim, have consistently propagated divisive ideologies and narratives aimed at undermining India’s pluralistic ethos.

The NPCC pointed out that Shah's remarks have sparked widespread condemnation, particularly from Dalit leaders and organizations across the country. Many have accused the Union Minister of harming the dignity of Dr. Ambedkar and his work.

“Dr. Ambedkar is not just a Dalit icon; he is a national hero whose contributions transcend caste, religion, and region. The backlash to these remarks is a testament to the respect and reverence he commands among Indians,” the memorandum stated.

The Congress noted that the BJP has thus far failed to provide a plausible explanation or clarification regarding Shah’s comments. Instead, they claimed, the party has doubled down on its stance, with its workers and leaders allegedly defending the remarks in various forums.

The NPCC urged the President of India, as the custodian of the Constitution, to take immediate and decisive action. They demanded that Shah be dismissed from his position as Union Home Minister and that he issue a public apology for his remarks.

They argued that failing to hold Shah accountable would set a dangerous precedent and erode public faith in the nation’s constitutional values. “India’s Constitution is a symbol of our collective aspirations for a just and equitable society. It cannot be allowed to be tarnished by irresponsible statements from those in positions of power,” the memorandum emphasized.

The Congress also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of marginalized communities and upholding the inclusive spirit of the Constitution. It vowed to continue its political and legal battles against any attempts to undermine the principles of justice, equality, and fraternity.
