Jalukie, November 24 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) on Monday held a mass-joining welcome programme for a total of 417 new members, led by Dr Tumda Newme, former Independent candidate from 6-Tening Assembly Constituency and a founding member of the Peren Division NDPP.
The event was organised by the Peren District Congress Committee (PDCC) at the residence of Dr Newme and was marked by an atmosphere of renewed hope and collective resolve to provide a robust alternative to the people of Nagaland.
In his address, Dr Tumda Newme articulated the compelling reasons for his decision to join the Indian National Congress. He stated that the people are profoundly disillusioned with the present state government, which he described as a "showmanship party" focused on flaunting wealth while the common man suffers.
"The rich are getting richer and the poor are suffering, and it is very sad to see the situation," Dr Newme stated, adding that he decided to stand with the people by joining the Congress, a party with a legacy of service and inclusivity.
S Supongmeren Jamir, MP (Lok Sabha) and President of NPCC, officially welcomed the new members into the Congress family. Jamir encouraged them to work diligently and strive for the party's goal of coming to power in the state in 2028.
Highlighting the significance of the moment, he noted the convergence of all three former candidates of Tening A/C under the Congress banner to fight for the common cause of the people. He made a fervent appeal to the public to shun the practice of accepting money during elections and to instead elect the right candidates and leaders who can usher in genuine development and prosperity.
Khriedi, Working President, NPCC, in her speech, pointed out the glaring loopholes in the governance model of the BJP and its allies. He highlighted how the party is manipulating democratic institutions, including the Election Commission, to win elections, thereby undermining the very foundations of democracy.
The welcome address was delivered by Namrachang Hegui, President, DCC Peren, who set a positive tone for the gathering. The program was graced by several senior leaders, including Rosy Thomson, In-Charge Peren District & General Secretary NPCC, and other functionaries from the district and state level.
