NPF asks government to address economic problems of lockdown

Kohima, June 6 (MExN): The Naga People’s Front on Sunday raised concerns over the impact of the lockdown on the economic welfare of the people and the spread of COVID-19 in rural areas.

In a communiqué issued by its Press Bureau, the party stated that “the impact of the continuous lockdown throughout the state has severely affected the poorer section of the society in terms of their two square meals a day.” As such, it questioned the state government on the programmes and initiatives it has taken so far to address the issue. It also stated that the price of essential commodities is ‘skyrocketing’ and said that the Government authority has remained silent on the matter.

On the rise of COVID-19 daily cases, which is now slowly transmitting towards the rural areas, it stated that unless the Government seriously addresses the economic problem, people would go hungry as the earning for many sections of the society has been by paralyzed for months due to lockdown.

Meanwhile, the party categorically reiterated the demand raised by its legislature wing that an inquiry is set up into the Government’s financial management during the pandemic. “The party stands by its demand that a detailed White Paper on all the funds received and expenditures incurred thereof from 2020-21 to 2021-22 along with all relevant methodology of grants, processes of procurement, disbursement criteria be published,” the release stated.

It also reminded the Government of the day to properly sensitize the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine and ensure sufficient availability of the vaccine to its people.
