Dimapur, January 18 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) with support from National Commission for Women (NCW) organized a one-day seminar in Dimapur on the theme ‘empowerment of rural women through education and skill development’ on January 18. 


According to the NSCW, the objective of the seminar was to empower Naga women and to make them aware of global changes impacting the local populace, and also to address livelihood skills and employment avenues in view of changing policies like Act East policy, which is going to impact the region in a significant way. 


In her keynote address, Khrienuo Tachü, Chairperson, NSCW, mentioned that women empowerment cannot happen if women at the grassroots do not have the requisite life skills, and that dignity of women also comes when they are self-reliant. The NSCW Chairperson also highlighted that scores of women empowerment programme are taking place across the country without livelihood intervention and skill development. 


Talking on importance of educating women, she mentioned that quality education must be equipped with local ingenuity and creativity that can address local issues and problems. Lauding the live demonstration session on skill development, Khrienuo Tachü mentioned that livelihood intervention and skill development is the need of the hour, if women in states like Nagaland have to catch up with the rest of the country.


In the first session, the resource persons were Dr Visakhonu Hibo, Colo Mero, Dr G Kanato Chophy, Dr Keneisenuo Solo, Viraho Hibo and Dr Easterine Kire. 


In the afternoon session, live demonstration were conducted on fresh flower bouquet arrangement, and home preparations like Naga king chilli pickle, cold dye, banana chips, Chizami fish, caramel custard, and marketing of Naga thali. The resource persons for outdoor live demonstration included Alole Epao, a homemaker and entrepreneur and other local experts. 


“The expected outcome of the seminar is that women can become agents of positive socio-economic change, gain dignity and progress towards wholesome empowerment,” NSCW added in a press release.
