Kohima, July 30 (MExN): The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) organised Orientation & Interactive Session under its Summer Internship Programme 2026 at DC Conference Hall, Kohima, on July 30.
Advocate, Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench & District Courts, Joshua Sheqi took the attendance on the Practical Aspects of Legal Practice in the High Court and District Courts, an update received here stated.
He provided interns with practical insights into court proceedings, case preparation, professional ethics, courtroom conduct and the day-to-day responsibilities of an advocate, emphasising the importance of diligence and integrity in legal practice.
Nancy Lotha, Advocate, Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench, spoke on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 (as amended), outlining the key provisions of the Act, child-friendly judicial procedures, and the legal safeguards available to child victims. She stressed the importance of adopting a victim-centric approach while ensuring that the rights and best interests of the child are protected throughout the legal process.
Speaking on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, Asenla Walling, Panel Lawyer, KDLSA, familiarised the interns with the practical application of the Act, including the classification of offences, procedural safeguards during search, seizure and arrest, and the evidentiary requirements in NDPS cases. She also highlighted the importance of strict compliance with statutory procedures, explaining how procedural lapses can significantly influence the outcome of criminal trials.
Berta Tep, Panel Lawyer, Kohima DLSA spoke about the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and Maintenance Laws. She examined the civil remedies available under the Act, the scope of protection, residence and monetary relief orders, and the legal principles governing maintenance. Stressing the practical role of legal practitioners, she encouraged the interns to adopt a client-centred approach while assisting vulnerable litigants and underscored the importance of legal aid in ensuring timely and effective access to justice.
Mhayani Kikon, Panel Lawyer, NSLSA gave the closing remarks and the programme was chaired by Aketoli J Yepthomi, Panel Lawyer, NSLSA.
As part of the internship programme with the state services authority, Intern visited Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench and interacted with officials and observed court proceedings.
The interns also visited new High Court Complex at Meriema and held interaction with Nagaland Lok Ayukta, Nino Iralu. During the interaction, Iralu shared insights into the role and functioning of the Lokayukta as an independent anti-corruption institution and highlighted its mandate in promoting transparency, accountability and integrity in public administration. She also encouraged the interns to uphold ethical values in the legal profession and stressed the importance of honesty, impartiality and public service in strengthening the rule of law.
