NU aspires to be knowledge hub

Mokokchung, July 30 (MExN): Nagaland University today held a one-day seminar about making the university a “knowledge city.” The seminar was held in the college auditorium here today. Former Maharashtra Governor Dr SC Jamir was the chief guest of the event, also attended by Additional Chief Secretary & Development Commissioner, Alemtemshi Jamir, and a host of other government officials.

The discourses by Jessy Jacob of JJA Architects Pvt Ltd. in Bangalore dwelled on the topic of turning Nagaland University into a ‘knowledge hub’ with modern infrastructure and amenities and attract foreign countries, especially the South East Asian into Nagaland for knowledge.

ACS & Development Commissioner Alemtemshi Jamir expressed his dream about such a big project as ‘knowledge city’ in Nagaland University but said it would need a lot of resources. He said funds for such a ‘big dream’ cannot be funded by the government alone and so suggested Public Private Partnership (PPP). Jamir also suggested talks on taxes in the state and also talked on the provision on the Article 371 (A) especially with regard to land rights and ownership.

Addressing the programme, Dr. SC Jamir expressed hope that Nagaland University would produce leaders, doctors and scientists. Jamir was the brains behind the setting up of Nagaland University way back in 1984. Jamir said Rajiv Gandhi laid the foundation of the university but it was the will and zeal of the people that led to the development of the university thus 40 years far.

Jamir urged the university’s staffs and students to turn the university into an institution of excellence. While acknowledging that most of the students in the university are ‘not qualitative,’ Jamir urged the vice chancellor of NU, Prof Kannan to make sure that the students going out of the university to be gainfully engaged and gainfully employed.

Also, asserting that the NU should be the role model for all universities in the north east, Jamir said the hope of the people is in NU to produce leaders, doctors, scientists and administrators who would contribute to the welfare of the people.

Dr Jamir also inaugurated newly-constructed women’s hostel. Local MLA I Kheto and former Deputy CM IK Sema were also present at the programme.
