Dimapur | June 7
Nagaland University has botched up yet again – and this time the institution has produced probably the biggest blunder in recent memory – an entirely erroneous set of examination results concerning not some students or a college but of the three entire academic streams: Arts, science and commerce’s Bachelors-level degree examinations for 2012.
Nagaland University’s authorities, including Vice Chancellor Prof. BK Konwar and NU Controller of Examination Prof. P Lal, have admitted that the results this time are erroneous and “in trouble.” In fact, at the time of filing this news report, the university has withheld the B. Arts, B. Science and B. Commerce results from its website for “verification” and was assuring to be “all right” and ‘uploaded’ either by June 7 night or June 8.
Nagaland University has blamed MindLogicx, the Bangalore-based web application firm, for the botched results. Observers will also remember the shoddy ‘online examination system’ which NU introduced about a year ago only to fizzle out after students’ organizations in Nagaland protested the slew of errors the system threw up.
Reports ascribed the errors in the 2012 Bachelors degree results to all the streams’ sections i.e., Bachelor of Arts year II and III, Bachelor of Science Year II and III and Bachelor of Commerce year II and III. According to a Principal of a college, the errors are mainly in the form of inequitable totals such as the number of students who sat the papers and/or were successful. Another blunder is the university declaring the same results of the streams multiple times but with entirely different details each time.
In fact, till Thursday, June 7 evening, Nagaland University’s website was showing a notice: “Results are being verified, updated results will be uploaded shortly” for the three streams for year II and III.
The notice is interesting for the reason that the institution declared the B. Science year II and III and B. Commerce year II and III results way back on May 28 while the B. Arts year II and II results were declared only on June 6, Wednesday. Even more interestingly, the university “re-declared” the B. Commerce results yesterday, June 6. This was confirmed by the Principal of a reputed institution in Kohima this evening. More shock: Principals of colleges in Kohima and Dimapur told this newspaper that the “re-declared” results were different from the previous.
Authorities of colleges and their students are currently enduring a harrowing time of confusion and panic, understandably. A Principal of a college in Kohima cited an instance of the ‘errors’ to this newspaper. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he said the results declared 57 students ‘appeared’ while 55 were declared ‘passed’ for the B. Commerce section of his institution. Then, for some reasons attributed to “errors”, the results for B. commerce year II and III were “re-declared” yesterday, June 6.
The Principal is not only completely distraught but also sufficiently perplexed to see now that the total number of his students shown to have “passed” has now gone all the way down to 50. And going by reports from institutions in Kohima and Dimapur, the said college isn’t the exception. President of the College Principals’ Forum of Nagaland Dr. P. Lorin said he is cognizant of the reports from colleges about the erroneous results of the three streams declared by NU. Nonetheless he said to comment only after seeing the actual results.
VC Konwar and CoE Lal responds
Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University BK Konwar admitted to this newspaper tonight that “technical problems” botched up the results. However, he blamed the gaffe on MindLogicx, the firm which NU hired to oversee the web application of the Bachelor degree examination results. Queried when the so-called “verified” results would be released, the VC said the results for the streams are currently undergoing verification and would be up on the website by June 7-8.
“We are verifying the results now. We are all trying our level best in the best interest of our colleges, especially our students. We have taken up the matter with them (MindLogicx) and the results should be cleared by today, in the night or a day so,” the vice chancellor said Thursday evening. Controller of Examination Prof. P Lal also admitted that the results ran into “technical failure” and “link problems.” He said “it is being corrected and the final version will be uploaded on the website; it will be taken care of.” He explained that “date-feeding” is done from Dimapur and sent all the way to Bangalore to Mindlogicx which in turn applies the content to the internet. In his explanation, the CoE said the mistakes were “realized” after the results were uploaded earlier. “It is being verified now,” he said of the results.
The VC and the Coe have assured that the matter has been ‘taken up’ with the application firm and university authorities. ‘We are concerned with our students; we feel sorry but we cannot do much because it is technical and beyond our control,’ the officials said by way of explanation.
