DIMAPUR, MARCH 15 (MExN): The students’ union of the Nagaland University (NU): School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Medziphema today stated that the university campus has been plagued with issues with regard to road, electricity, water supply and network connectivity over years.
A press release from the union’s President, Chumbenthung Patton informed that the main road connecting the University Campus to Medziphema town, stretching about 5km, is in deplorable conditions saved occasionally by the mud filling of the pot holes.
“The students’ community, staffs, and the general citizens face a great deal of hardships commuting the road on a daily basis. No proper repairing work has been done for decades and as such, the road is in dire need of a major reconstruction,” it pointed out.
It further stated that the Campus is also faced with the problems of availability of clean water supply throughout the year.
Meanwhile, electricity and internet connectivity is a perennial problem faced by the students’ community as well as the residents of the campus, the students’ union stated.
“NU: SASRD, being a research and technical oriented Institute, is centered on laboratory works for researches which requires continuous supply of electricity. The frequent load sheddings (which goes on for days at times), coupled with the frequent breakdown of transformers in and around Medziphema town leads to power cuts and fluctuations frequently, the brunt of which is borne not only by the students but also by all the residents of Medziphema area,” it informed.
This problem has hampered the “smooth functioning of research and academic activities,” it stated adding that the network connectivity is very poor in the campus as well. “The need for a good internet connection is still a far cry for the students and staffs in the campus,” it said.
The union informed that time and again the concerned authorities have been informed of the aforementioned issues but “no tangible action has been taken for their improvement.” It therefore asked the State Government as well as the concerned authorities to look into these matters as soon as possible.
Besides being the only Agricultural Institute in Nagaland, the SASRD shares its location with the Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH), Veterinary Field Assistant Training Institute (VFATI), State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI), in addition to sub divisional offices.
