DIMAPUR, JANUARY 12 (MExN): The Nagaland University Students’ Union (Lumami) has voiced out resentment against the recent violent events at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) where students and faculties were subjected to serious physical assaults and psychological trauma.
Condemning the attack, the NUSU in a press release lamented that an institute which once proudly gave birth to intellects, activists, leaders and many more and contributed so much for the nation has now become a “bleeding war zone.”
The Union also condemned the actions of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a right wing all India students’ organization for assaulting its fellow students and lecturers. At the same time, it expressed astonishment over the incompetence and cowardice of the police personnel to intervene and provide security for the students and lecturers.
Also condemning what it alleged as the “disgraceful response” of the JNU Vice Chancellor and his administrative colleagues for not doing even the bare minimum for the safety of its own students and faculties, the Union said this clearly exhibited his dereliction of duty and failure in his duty towards the students and staff of his university.
The Union therefore asserted that this renders him unfit to hold the highest post in an internationally recognized institution of higher education and expressed support on the demand for immediate resignation of the current VC.
Extending full moral support to “all our brothers and sisters of JNU and the lecturers,” the Union stated that “this attack only strengthens our resolve to fight for what is right, to fight against injustice and for truth.”
