NVCO emphasises role of women in society

Kohima, March 7 (MExN): As part of its ongoing two week-long celebration of World Consumer Rights Day, the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) observed International Women’s  Day with the global theme ‘Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World.’

According to a press release NVCO Press & Media Cell, a brief meeting was held in Kohima to mark the occasion. The release stated that the role and contribution of women in the world are to be recognized and regarded in a most respectable manner in many areas. “Women are also at the forefront of the battles against COVID-19, as front-line and health sector workers, as scientists, doctors and caregivers. When woman lead, we see positive results and some of the most efficient and exemplary response to the COVID-19 pandemic were led by women,” it added.

The release further stated that women can play important role in achieving the World Consumer Rights Day theme of ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution,’ through active participation and commitment. Citing the example of how drainages in Kohima and Dimapur have been clogged with single-use plastics, especially after the recent spate of rain, the NVCO stated that citizens have been putting in so much hard work and conducting social work and campaigns to keep their cities clean. “But it is not enough and it is everyone’s responsibility to manage our waste and stopped using one-time use plastic,” the release stated.

NVCO President Kezhokhoto Savi meanwhile pointed out a landmark judgment for women recently passed by the Supreme Court of India that recognised the impact that a ‘homemaker’ has on the economic condition of the family as well as the nation.

Citing the ruling, Savi stated that a homemaker’s work contributes, “to the economic condition of the family, and the economy of the nation, regardless of the fact that it may have been traditionally excluded from economic analyses... it is a step towards the constitutional vision of social equality and ensuring dignity of life to all individuals.”
