Kohima, January 11 (MExN): Youth Leadership and Community Development programme training programme was conducted at Eden Garden, Khuzama, Kohima from January 7 to 9 by Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Kohima.
Rev Fr Raymond SJ while welcoming the NYK officials and the participants urged all to make the best use of the training programme.
As per a press release from DYC, NYK, Kohima, Mhasil Nicholas, National Youth Volunteer and John Makhabo, DYC NYK were the resource persons for the training.
The DYC highlighted the aims and objectives of the youth leadership and community development programme. He said that the training programme was conducted with a view to help young people translate knowledge, develop appropriate attitudes and inculcate values that would help them acquire the ability to effective leader imbibed with proper leadership qualities and develop good personality.
John Makhabo, DYC in his deliberation dwelled on leadership, duties and responsibilities of leader, characteristics of a leader, qualities and function of leaders which were discussed at length.
He said that there are so many leaders in our society but many lack effective leadership qualities. The leaders should be the one who share the message not through his words but action, “as action speak louder than words.”
The footprint of a leader left behind is where one can judge the quality of his or her leadership, said Makhabo and urged the gathering to be the change “you want to be and be a better leader tomorrow.”
Speaking on qualities and function of a leader, Makhabo highlighted the characteristics of effective leaders. “One should be able to communicate effectively, take initiatives, be resourceful, assume full responsibilities with creative and critical thinking skills.”
He also stressed on the need to build personality development where one can develop self-confidence, self esteem and positive attitude towards life.
The resource person pointed out that anyone who wants to shine in life need to imbibe leadership qualities for successful career.
Mhasil Nicholas took sessions on effective communication skills and inter-person relationship. He called upon the youth to be a leader who is effective in communication, stating that “one has to be a good teacher working with the community.”
He underscored that effective communication was “very important for the public or audience to understand the speaker’s concept and content.”
While speaking on inter personal relationship, Nicholas called upon the youth to keep healthy relationship with the people at home and other persons.
Healthy relationship with peer will drive away stress and negative emotion, he said.
On public speaking, Nicholas noted that public leaders should know the essence of public speaking skills and narrated the basics of public speaking.
He further dealt on decision making and effective planning skills. The participants were taught on how to making decision skills going through various choices and keeping priority on the gravity of issues.
The programme ended with vote of thanks from trainees and organizations. The training was attended by 35 inmates.
