NZPO welcomes Reservation Review Commission

PEREN, AUGUST 16 (MExN): The Nagaland Zeliang People Organisation (NZPO) has welcomed the decision of the State Government to constitute a Reservation Review Commission, describing it as a necessary step to address disparities in government employment.

Acknowledging the “early leaders of the State,” the NZPO said they had recognised the imbalance in education and economic status among various tribes and had magnanimously earmarked certain percentages of posts for the disadvantaged sections. This arrangement, it said, had enabled some of its people to secure government employment and work harmoniously with those from more advanced areas of the State over the past decades.

“We welcome and appreciate the initiative taken by the present Government, headed by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, to constitute the Reservation Review Commission. It is hoped that the Commission will thoroughly examine all aspects and come up with an arrangement to provide opportunities to the deserving backward and less privileged sections of people,” the organisation stated.

The NZPO said this would help the less privileged sections catch up with others and maintain a sense of belonging, in the same manner that Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and others enjoy certain reservations in the country.

Pointing to the disparity in employment, it said that despite the reservation policy being implemented in Nagaland for decades, a vast gap still exists between the advanced and backward tribes in terms of government sector employees. The organisation cited data published in local dailies on June 12, 2025, as a “glaring example” of why the policy needs to be implemented in “letter and spirit for justice to prevail.”
“It is hoped that the Reservation Review Commission will not leave any stone unturned to find out the bare facts on the ground and come up with remedial measures to narrow the huge disparity that exists between the privileged and less privileged within the State,” the NZPO said.

It further expressed hope that the government of the day would “wisely decide on matters of utmost importance and adopt a just policy, especially in the interest of the deserving underprivileged classes.”
