To mark 75 years of Khami-Makhu Unity in Kigwema village to be observed this year in December, village folks initiated a “one man one fruit tree” plantation drive by planting 2000 saplings in the vicinity of the village and national highway passing the village on April 24.
According to the Secretary for the Khami-Makhu 75 years celebration, Ruokuovikho Chale, the Khami- Makhu Unity is a bond over a Peace Treaty made in the year 1946 with the help of “much loved neighboring khels, villages and help rendered from government machineries, administration and well wishers.”
The two khels- in present day called Khamima and Makhuma Khel are both two major khels of Kigwema Village, where the two khels abided by the Peace Treaty and pledged to work towards development progress both in term of economic and human resources, he said.
As part of the yearlong celebration, the community decided to let every individual plant and protect a fruit bearing tree in the larger interest of generations to come and as a legacy of the present generation.
The plantation drive commended at Khami-Makhu Ground, Kigwema under the leadership of Dr. Neisakho Kere, Convener of the Celebration Committee.
The fruit tree saplings numbering to thousand was donated by the Department of Forest, Kohima Division.
