Only 141 Nagaland doctors registered with MCI

No central data on rural-urban distribution of doctors, Health Minister tells Parliament

Dimapur, September 18 (MExN): More than 12 lakh doctors are registered in India, out of which Nagaland has only 141 doctors who have registered with the State Medical Councils/Medical Council of India as on June 30, 2020.

This data was provided by Minister of State in the Ministry Of Health And Family Welfare, Ashwini Kumar Choubey in response to the unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha on details of per capita availability of doctors in India raised by Trinamool Congress MP, Derek O’Brien.

The Minister also informed that 12, 55,786 allopathic doctors and 7.88 lakh Ayurveda, Unani and Homeopathy (AUH) doctors are registered in the country as on June 30, 2020.

Assuming 80% availability, the total doctor-population ratio is 1:825 as per current population estimate of 135 crore.

As per information provided by the Board of Governors in supersession of Medical Council of India (MCI), 3, 71,870 allopathic doctors have registered their specialist/postgraduate qualification with Medical Council of India/State Medical Council.

On being queried about the details of rural-urban and State-wise distribution of doctors, the Minister informed that no data regarding rural and urban distributions of the doctors are maintained centrally.
