Organisations condemn alleged rape of minor

Dimapur, March 26 (MExN): Several organisations have condemned the alleged rape of a minor at Half Nagarjan, Dimapur which occurred on March 19.

DENSU: In a press release on Friday, the Dimapur Eastern Nagaland Students’ Union condemned the incident and said that deterrent punishment must be given to the accused. It appealed the law enforcing agency to strictly investigate into the matter and also appealed the trial court not to grant bail to the accused on any grounds. It also urged the court to expedite the case proceedings so that justice is not delayed.

“Through this condemnation statement, the union further asserts that if the accused is released on bail before trial or at the time of trial and if any untoward incident is occurs to the accused or the victim and family, the state shall be solely held responsible,” the statement read.

CSUD: The Chang Students' Union Dimapur (CSUD) meanwhile expressed shock at the alleged rape and condemned the barbaric and inhumane act. The Union shall not condone such heinous crime committed upon our fellow sister and want the higher authority to leave no stone unturned in delivering justice to the victim, it stated while appealing the law enforcing agencies to investigate the matter and ensure that the accused is brought to book under the rule of the law. It also expressed solidarity and sympathy to the victim and her family.

YSUD: In a separate statement, the office of the Yimchungrü Students' Union Dimapur strongly condemned the heinous crime and said that such “criminals should be punished as per law so that it acts as a deterrent to other would-be offenders.”

The union firmly believes in the law enforcing agencies and its jurisdiction that it would deliver quick justice to the innocent victim and her family, it added.

SSUD: The Sangtam Students' Union Dimapur strongly condemned the ghastly act and called upon the law enforcing agencies to provide swift trial and justice to the minor and her family at the earliest. The Union also expressed concern over the rise of criminal sexual offences against minors in the state, which it said, frequently get resolved through ‘compromise’ without reaching the police. It urged those victims and their families to have faith in the law and with courage, give an opportunity for the Rule of Law to occur in the land. The victims are denied justice when families ‘compromise’ instead of opting for legal justice, it said, while pointing out that the unaddressed trauma would lead to an unstable future for the minor.
