The Oriental College Kohima today conducted its 4th Skill Fest 2022 in collaboration with Nagaland State Rural Livelihood Mission at the college premises. It was inaugurated by Imtimenla, Mission Director NSRLM.
Dr Ketshukietuo Dzüvichü, Principal Oriental College, in his keynote address enlightened the gathering about the concept behind the Fest.
He said that having witnessed the adverse impact of advancement and modernization among younger generations which has led to increased social unrest, disillusionment, rampant unemployment, frustration and distrust in the system, the College started Life Skills and Personality Development (LSPD) as an add-on curriculum from 2017
The objective is to help bridge the gap between practice and theory. To think beyond Government jobs, to be self-reliant and to lead productive, independent lives after acquiring their degrees and contribute towards economic growth of the state and the country in general.
The Trades for Skill Fest '22 included Assistant Beauty Therapist (SPA), Baking, Pickle making, Basket weaving, Embroidery, Flower arrangement, Electrical fitting, Masonry, Plumbing and Solar panel installation.
The Principal also shared a success story of Oriental College when he happened to visit Sakraba village under Chizami block of Phek district. He recalled that the Chairman of the Village Council enlightened him how students who studied in Oriental College from his village never stay idle but earn their own livelihood and live an independent life. He praised God for this and reminded the teachers as well as the students about their goal - to groom the students to live an independent life and be an asset not a liability to society.
Keeping in mind all these factors, Skill Fest with different trades is held every year creating skills necessary for enhancing employability as well as entrepreneur abilities of the students.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Neikosenuo Kiso, Assistant Professor, Education Department.
