Orientation on inclusive education held at Tseminyu

Tseminyu, August 31 (MExN): A one-day orientation program on Inclusive Education based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was organised by the SCERT, Nagaland, Kohima in collaboration with the SDEO Office Tseminyu at the EBRC Hall, Tseminyu on August 29.

In the inaugural program, Asao Seb, SDEO Tseminyu chaired the proceedings. Invocation prayer was offered by Nendiya Magh of KU Baptist Church, while the welcome address was delivered by Rushvulo Khing, Coordinator, EBRC Tseminyu. Civil SDO Tseminyu, Tsidi, NCS, delivered a short speech encouraging teachers to make difficult concepts simple for all students to understand. He further encouraged the NGOs, Church and the Rengma Handicapped Union to “unitedly work for uplifting the cause of the Citizens in education” and wished both the participants and the resource persons “a happy learning experience.” Later, the word of appreciation was given by Shasenle Kent, IERP, EBRC Tseminyu.

The resource persons for the day were Daniel Thong Seb, Vice Principal and Head IE & ICT; Rukuse Sakhrie, Music Therapist from Jo Foundation Inclusive School; and Dr. Asunu Thong, MS TB Hospital Khuzama.

The chairman extended his gratitude to Keviraleü Kerhuo, Director, SCERT for the programme “which has benefited both the Govt. School teachers and the NGOs comprising of the Church, PwDs, Rengma Handicapped Union and some Private Schools.”

In his session, Daniel Thong Seb gave a brief explanation about Inclusive Education in the perspective of NEP 2020 and conducted activities to develop empathy skills. He also mentioned about the different Acts including the RPwD Act 2016 where different types of disabilities are mentioned. He concluded his session by introducing the basics of Nagaland Sign Language and handed over the module to the participants.

The second resource person, Rukuse Sakhrie, gave the importance of making use of music as a therapy to calm down hyper active children. He further said that “music therapy is not only about singing but it’s about understanding the person’s need to address the problem in holistic manner.”

Dr. Asunu Thong in her session shared her experience as a parent of Children with Special Needs (CWSN) and advised the teachers and NGOs on how to support them with patience, love and tender care.

The SDEO Office and SCERT team resolved to support one CWSN who wished to receive further education. A similar program was held in DIET Pfutsero on August 27.

Participants included teachers from 45 government schools, representatives from 8 churches, a private school, members of the Rengma Handicapped Union and parents of CWSN, making the total 65 participants.
