Mounting pressure upon Nagaland University’s Visitor, the President of India, to accept the resignation of Professor GD Sharma as NU Vice-Chancellor, the Nagaland University Teachers Association (NUTA) today reportedly met with the Visitor and Union Minister of Human Resources Development, Arjun Singh today at New Delhi, sources informed from the country’s capital Monday.
Sources, closely-associated with the run-up to the VC’s resignation and NUTA’s subsequent pressure, told The Morung Express that a delegation of the association led by its President, Rosemary Dzuvichu, met with the Visitor and officials of MHRD Monday and submitted a memorandum demanding for the immediate acceptance of Professor GD Sharma’s resignation and a search committee be set up at the earliest for appointment of a new VC. The NUTA also submitted a Memorandum to the Chief Rector of NU Nagaland Governor Shyamal Datta as well as Congress President Sonia Gandhi to recommend acceptance of Sharma’s resignation, added the sources. However, independent confirmation whether or not the NU Visitor or Gandhi rendered any assurances to the delegation, could not be made till filing of this report. It was, however, informed that it was expected that further developments could be consequent a few days from now on.
It may be added that the NUTA team left on Wednesday last for New Delhi.
Meanwhile a statement received here from NUTA President Rosemary Dzuvichu and President CEC NUTA Dr Akali Sema informed that the delegation had a series of meetings with top officials of the MHRD during the past few days on the NU crisis and an emergency meeting held with the Federation of Central University Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) at the DUTA office. At the meeting it was resolved that the FEDCUTA would represent to the Minister MHRD demanding for the immediate acceptance of Prof. G.D.Sharma’s resignation and a search committee be set up at the earliest for the new VC.
Further consultations were held Saturday with the Naga Students Union Delhi (NSUD), NPMHR, and other Naga organizations including senior Naga Research Scholars from JNU and DU, where it was unanimously decided the organizations would submit representations to the Ministry and the Visitor for immediate acceptance of Professor G.D.Sharma’s resignation in the interest of the student community and the University as a whole.
The delegation also called on the Rajya Sabha MP T.R.Zeliang and the Lok Sabha MP Wanyu Konyak from Nagaland and apprised the two representatives in Parliament of the pertinent issues leading to the VC’s resignation. The two MPs would be submitting a joint representation to the Visitor and the Minister MHRD. The NUTA has also sent a Memorandum to the Chief Rector Shyamal Datta Goa, Governor SC Jamir, Asangba Sangtam Ex- MP as well as to the Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to recommend for the acceptance of Prof. G.D.Sharma’s resignation.
In related matter the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) Lumami, Kohima respectively and SASARD Medziphema Campus have unanimously decided to continue with the indefinite boycott of classes till the resignation “In the event Professor Sharma’s resignation is rejected, we will be forced to take our own course of further action” PGSU-L President Along told this paper adding that “other measures were already being contemplated upon, in case.” PGSU-K President Thonsenlo Magh also informed all post-graduate students Kohima campus NU to attend an emergency General Meeting on March 7 March at 10AM at the History & Archaeology department. “The PGSU Kohima Campus felt the need to convene this emergency meeting to discuss on certain developments pertaining to the resignation tendered by the Vice Chancellor, NU and delayed action from the Visitor, NU” a notice stated.
