Over 600 families are estimated to have been affected by floods as a result of the rains that bounded Dimapur during the past 48 hours. Localities along the Balu stream in the north western periphery of the town bordering Assam bore the brunt of the downpour as the stream swelled to inundate low lying houses in its proximity.
The count was based on an assessment of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). According to sources quoting DDMA officials, the worst affected were families in Lengrijan, Grace colony, Anitet colony, Notun Basti, LRC colony and Sachu colony located near Sewak.
Meanwhile, MLA Moatoshi Longkumer, who represents 2 Dimapur II AC, visited the flood affected colonies, stated a press release. Longkumer led a team of district administration officials, including the DDMA. The release said that they met the GBs and council chairmen of Grace colony and Anitet Colony in Lengrijan and also inspected the bridge over the Balu stream in Lengrijan “as the flood waters have reached the bridge,” and further visited LRC colony, Naga cemetery and Sachu colony.
Following the inspection, the team deliberated on the relief works required. The release said that the MLA asked the DDMA to assess the extent of damage in consultation with the affected colony councils and provide immediate assistance.
The release provided a DDMA emergency number - 1070 which can be contacted for any emergency.
