The 1st death anniversary of Padma Shree Mulhupra Vero (properly known as M Vero), was observed at Runguzu Nasa under Phek district on Sunday.
Late Vero, the first Rajya Sabha MP from Nagaland and the first president of Naga Hoho, passed away last year on January 24. He was recipient of Padma Shree in 2006 for his contribution in the field of social services.
During the 1st death anniversary programme held here this morning, a monolith was unveiled by former state chaplain Rev Khrütsoyi Lürüo. On the occasion, Rev Lürüo remembered late Vero as a man of determination and lover of truth, who had done so much for Naga unity and reconciliation.
Sharing ‘A relook at M Vero’s village life,’ Huveru described the former MP as an upright man who devoted his life for the betterment and progress of the society. Late Vero worked wholeheartedly for peace and unity among the Nagas, he added.
Kerele Vero, wife of late Vero said that her husband’s greatest concern was to love and care for humanity.
Various speakers including Vekho Vero and Neikhrolo Khalo highlighted the life of the departed leader, stating that the ‘peacemaker’ and his good deeds will be remembered forever. Another speaker, Zhopra Vero suggested that in-depth research on the life and contributions of late Vero is needed for the younger generation to follow his good principles.
The function was chaired by Kuduvotso while Ranyi proposed vote of thanks.
Late Vero was the first Naga Rajya Sabha member having served two terms- March 18, 1964 to April 2, 1968 then from April 3, 1968 to April 2, 1974.
He was elected to Nagaland Legislative Assembly from NNO Party Ticket, representing 19th- Phek A/C in 1974. He was re-elected to Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1989 from Chozuba A/C and became a cabinet minister.
He was appointed as chairman of the Liaison Committee of Naga Hoho on October 31, 1995 and went on to be elected as the first president of Naga Hoho from 1998-2004.
As president of Naga Hoho, late Vero undertook tours in Nagaland and other places including Kathmandu, Bangladesh border, Myanmar and Atlanta (USA) for reconciliation among Naga national political groups.
