Chuchuyimlang, July 15 (MExN): The ‘Padmashree Natwar Thakkar Memorial Old-Age Home’ initiated by Chuchuyimlang Baptist Church (CBC) was dedicated in a simple function on July 15. The function was attended by Church officials, village council members, and prominent citizens including Padmashree Lentina Thakkar, wife of Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, founder of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram, Chuchuyimlang and general public.

The Centre was implemented at the suggestion of Late Natwar Thakkar who, in the year 2009 donated to the Church an amount of Rs 2 lakh which he had received as cash component of some Awards including Rs 1 lakh for the ‘Lifetime Contribution to Naga People Award’ conferred upon him in the year 2009 by Chuchuyimlang Citizens’ Forum. Making the donation, Thakkar had urged the Church to implement some project that would have some positive impact on the lives of elderly people of the village. Using this amount as seed money, the Church augmented the fund for the creation of the Centre with generous contribution from the Church as well as mobilising voluntary donation. A generous amount of Rs 5 lakh was also received from The Hans Foundation, New Delhi towards the project.

Speaking on the occasion, Convenor of the Construction Committee, Lanumatong highlighted the timeline of the project implementation.

Rev T Lima, Pastor, CBC who led the dedicatory service made a presentation on the future plans for running of the Home. He also said that the facility is named after the Founder of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram, Chuchuyimlang, Padmashree Natwar Thakkar to celebrate his life and work which was centered solely on uplifting the lives of the less privileged of the society. He said that a well thought out, need based system would be worked out for operationalizing the Old-Age Home with the objective of generating maximum benefit to the needy elders.

Dr Aotoshi, Managing Trustee of Nagaland Gandhi Ashram, Chuchuyimlang, who also spoke on the occasion, urged the citizens, especially the youth, to render voluntary services to the elders through the Home. He emphasized on the fact that our elderly parents and grandparents need more of physical and emotional care rather than material assistance such as money and other luxuries. As such, he said the Old-Age Home should be utilized effectively as a Hub of activities for the care of the elders.

Guru Chubatozung, Senior member of Chuchuyimlang Village Council extended gratitude to Late Natwar Thakkar and CBC for this novel initiative. He further assured of all possible help of the Village Council to successfully run the activity.
