‘Pandemics: Do they change how we address age and ageing?’

Around 100 older persons in and around Ngwalwa village under Peren district have been honoured and offered a gift during the observance of International Day of older persons here on October 1.

It was organized by Good Samaritan Women Society (GSWS) Kohima under the theme “Pandemics: Do they change how we address age and ageing?”

Speaking on the occasion as the special guest, Peren deputy commissioner Sentiwapang Aier stressed on the need to give special focus not only on the longevity aspects of life but on the healthy and quality of life.

“We should not only focus on the length of life. Quality of life matters,” he said.  

We need to do more for our elderly, he said and urged upon the people to come out with proper framework to assist the older persons.

We are going to have more population of older persons by 2050 in the country, Aier said and called upon the people to start planning from now “as to how to handle and take care of them.”

GSWS chairperson Neithonuo Liegise informed that the Society plan to open another senior citizen’s home at Tuensang.

She also said that that it aims to set up resource centres for older persons in Kohima.

The Society also aims to reach out to the older persons in the villages through mobile medical units.

Ngwalwa village council chairman Heigwang Rao also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Heinswading.
