‘Pangikala’- an artist ahead of her time

Kisama, December 8 (MExN): Late Pangikala, a pioneer in the field of fine arts in Nagaland, was a self-taught artist who painted skilfully with the very limited tools that were available to her at that time. Her artworks are some of the oldest pieces of ‘fine art’ from Nagaland.
Pangikala won awards for her artworks in Nagaon, Assam in 1932 and in Mokokchung, Nagaland in the early fifties. Over 20 pieces of paintings, sketches and handwork created by her are being preserved at the ‘L’ Tasnur Villa- Home Art Gallery at Padumpukhri, Dimapur. Some of her rare artworks including her award winning art are exhibited at Hornbill Festival for the general public to view.
Young emerging artists such as Ibeto V Swu, Alem Longkumer, Lanu Keitzar, Zapuno Zinyu, Hoshi Tsozo, Mhasiselhu Viyie, Inoto Achumi, K Alliso Solo, Limatula Longkumer artworks are also featured and available for sale at the Artsy Naga Gallery, curated by the art curating team Artsy Naga.
