KOHIMA, JAN 27 (MExN): Lieutenant General Bhopinder Singh, AVSM, VSM, the Director General of Assam Rifles has been conferred with Param Vishist Seva Medal on the occasion of Republic Day.
Commissioned into the Dogra Regiment in June 1965, Lt. Gen. Singh has a long and illustrious career spanning forty years. He is a veteran of 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak Wars and has vast experience having served in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and OP RAKSHAK and commanded a mountain brigade in Sikkim and an Infantry Division in Jammu and Kashmir.
He held various covered command, staff and instructional appointments including tenure at India Military Academy, Dehradun, Defence Services Staff College Wellington and IMTRAT Bhutan. Prior to taking over the present command of Assam Rifles, the General officers was Inspector General of Special Frontier Force, a PIB (Defence Wing) release said here. Lt. Gen Singh took over the reins of Assam Rifles, the oldest Para Military Force of the country in April 2004. Soon after taking over as the DGAR, his conceptual changes have made the Assam Rifles operationally more effective and also improved the welfare of the troops immensely.
Working towards the cause of the north east region, Gen. Singh has started many projects for development of the region. Under the aegis of the General officer various projects/conclaves towards combating HIV/AIDS were initiated at various places on the entire North Eastern region. He has initiated innumerable projects in the Military Civic Action plans like providing medical and health camps, water supply scheme, construction of school building and playgrounds, establishment of vocational training centres and development of model village sin the remote areas, the release added.
