Past Rotary International President visits Nagaland

Kohima: “If you want to live up to the 21st Century, you have to mend your ways, be disciplined and think of others,” said Kalyan Banerjee, Past Rotary International President during his visit to Kohima on March 22 at The Heritage, Kohima.

The welcome address was given by Rosemary Dzüvichü, President, Rotary Club Kohima while a speech was given by Kalpana Khound, PDG Rtn. Special numbers were presented by Rotarian Theja Meru and young boys from the Kohima Orphanage. The program was followed by a brief interactive session where students and civil society leaders raised questions and solutions on the problems faced in Nagaland with special emphasis on education. “It is time to go beyond ourselves and start touching others’ life,” said Kalpana Khound who gave a brief introduction on Rotary’s total literacy mission while asserting that Nagaland is a place of motivation. Khound also stated that it was because of the efforts of the Rotary club in Nagaland that spread public awareness programs in the eradication of polio in Nagaland.

“India is the country of the future. There is no country in the world that has so much culture of what India have. And there is tremendous unity in our diversity.” said Kalyan Banerjee while encouraging the youth to learn from the outside world yet to come back and change the nation.

Kalyan Banerjee is a Chemical Engineer by profession and was born in Gujarat in 1942. He was the 101 Rotary International President and the third President from India.  Rotary is the world’s oldest fellowship organization which has worked for various peace programs in the world and provides the world’s largest number of scholarships to post graduate studies and has 1.23 million members all over the world.

Members of Rotary Club Kohima, representatives of ENPO, Naga Mothers Association, students of Nagaland University and Law College Kohima, and media personnel attended the meeting.
