Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton today said the primary objective of each and every police officer should be to ensure creating a conducive and congenial environment in the society in which people of all walks of life can pursue their vocations without any fear or difficulty.

“No other agency in the government has been entrusted with such volume of responsibility for maintaining peace and order in the society other than the police force and you should be proud of that distinction”, the Deputy CM said.

Patton was addressing the 49th general conference of the Nagaland Police Service Association (NPSA) held at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex Chumoukedima on Friday.

He said a policeman happens to be the most visible representative of the government to its citizens and in the hour of need, danger or crisis when citizens do not know what to do or whom to approach, they seek the police station or a policeman.

“The police are expected to be the most accessible, interactive, disciplined and dynamic organization of any given society…and the efficacy of the police organization or any of its unit is, therefore, judged ultimately, in terms of its efficiency in the delivery of police services to the people”, Patton said.

While recognizing the commendable jobs performed by police officers, particularly the NPS officers who hold the “vital middle level positions”, the Deputy CM however cautioned that indiscipline, lethargy, irresponsible behaviours and highhandedness should be a bane to police officers.

Patton said one area of serious concern in the police force is the presence of some drug addicts and alcoholic personnel. “We must come up with a comprehensive legal mechanism to further strengthen the service jurisprudence to screen out such irresponsible personnel from the service in the police force”, he said.

Patton, who also holds the Home portfolio, also said that policing needs to be upgraded in the field of cyber-security and cyber crimes. He further stated that policing, especially controlling organized crimes must continue to be a focused attention.

Assuring that the government is doing its best to bring about improvements be it the service matters, promotions and other infrastructural and organizational requirements of the police force, Patton urged the police officers to continue rendering their sincere and dedicated services.

Nagaland Director General of Police, T John Longkumer, in his address said since the inception of Nagaland State, the Nagaland Police and its officers have roughed over violent and turbulent times and left a legacy in line with the Nagaland Police’s motto.

He said Nagaland Police personnel have over the years come to be one of the most respected police forces in the country and their exploits and services in other states have drawn admiration from all over the country.

The DGP exhorted the police officers to carry forward the legacy with renewed responsibility and dedication. Longkumer further underscored the need on reforms in the Police Department in order to improve policing.

Earlier, NPSA president, Vekhosa Chakhesang, in his presidential address said it was unfortunate that there have been grievances within the fraternity members and matter taken to the court. “This is going to affect not only our members but also the lower ranks down to constabulary. In this regard, I appeal the officers to re-think for the larger interest of police force”, he said.
