Mon–Charaideo joint committee adopts resolutions to maintain peace and harmony

Mon, November 3 (MExN): A joint body representing Mon district, Nagaland and Charaideo district, Assam has resolved that all inter-community disputes must be routed through it before any unilateral action, according to a resolution adopted at a meeting held November 3.

The meeting, hosted by the Konyak Union at its office meeting hall in Mon headquarters, was attended by members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) representing both districts. After detailed deliberations, the members unanimously adopted the resolutions “in the interest of maintaining peace, harmony, mutual cooperation and cordial relations among all communities residing in the two neighboring districts.”

The organisation, previously called the Joint Action Committee (JAC), was unanimously renamed the Joint Peace Committee (JPC), stated an update issued by the committee.

In a key resolution aimed at preventing flare-ups, the committee decided that “any incident, misunderstanding or situation arising on either side that may affect the relationship between the communities or districts, the matter shall first be promptly communicated to the concerned officials of the Joint Peace Committee (JPC).” All parties shall exercise restraint and refrain from unilateral decisions or actions without first bringing the matter to the JPC's notice for consultation and intervention.

The committee resolved that criminal matters shall not be viewed, interpreted or treated as communal issues. “Instead, both sides shall work collectively and responsibly to address such matters diligently in accordance with the provisions of law and established legal procedures, ensuring that justice prevails and that any dispute or conflict is resolved in a fair, impartial and peaceful manner.”

The JPC shall also discourage any attempt to communalise criminal incidents or disturb communal harmony.

The JPC will convene a general meeting at least twice a year, once each in Mon and Charaideo districts, while special or emergency meetings may be convened by the President and Secretary General whenever necessary to deliberate on urgent issues and matters of mutual importance.

The members duly discussed and approved the committee's official letterhead and seal, while the official logo and flag will be deliberated upon and placed for approval at the next meeting.

The JPC will maintain and issue official designation identity cards to its appointed office-bearers and members for identification and official purposes, to be countersigned or authenticated by the District Administrations of Mon and Charaideo.

To strengthen people-to-people ties, the committee decided to organise an annual cultural exchange programme involving communities from both districts, aimed at strengthening mutual understanding, preserving cultural heritage, promoting people-to-people relations and fostering peace, unity and brotherhood. JPC officials and executives will organise the programme in collaboration with both district administrations and organisations.

Both communities agreed to allot suitable sites for the construction of a Konyak Ahng Morung in Charaideo district and a Tai-Ahom Cultural Centre at Mon headquarters. The JPC also resolved to pressurise the respective administrations and police to strictly monitor drug abuse and trafficking so as to mitigate the unchecked flow of drugs.

Tingthok Konyak was appointed President and Diganta Changmei Secretary General of the JPC for the tenure 2026–2029, effective from November 3, 2026. The remaining vacant posts will be filled through nominations by respective organisations, with names to be submitted to the President or Secretary General by November 20, 2026, for induction, it stated.

In its concluding remarks, the members resolved to uphold the “spirit of mutual trust, cooperation, peaceful coexistence and collective responsibility,” and to serve as a common platform for dialogue, consultation and peaceful resolution of issues affecting the people of both districts while safeguarding the longstanding social, cultural and traditional ties shared by the communities.

The resolutions were adopted unanimously by members present at the meeting on November 3, 2026, and issued “in the interest of peace, unity, mutual understanding and harmonious coexistence.”
