DIMAPUR, MAY 24 (MExN): The Naga Peoples Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) today said it was of the belief “that the Peace process should go beyond the negotiating table/parties to engage the people.” It has made an appeal to all political groups for restraint and understanding, in order to facilitate conducive atmosphere for the people to effectively participate in the peace building process.
The rights body has viewed with serious concern the chain of events in different parts of ‘Naga homeland’ with the potency of further exacerbating tension and thereby limiting the peace building process. “NPMHR condemns some of the recent incidents of killings by different armed Naga political groups and attack on innocent civilians. The most recent incident being the killing of Ngampan Konyak, a Kilonser of the NSCN (K) on 18 May 2006 in Mon allegedly by rival NSCN (IM),” a release said.
“Therefore to restore a sense of direction and evolve a unity of purpose amongst all Naga national groups, violent killings by all national groups should be restrained since it is not conducive for the establishment of a peaceful democratic mass movement for achieving a meaningful resolution of the long standing Indo-Naga conflict.”
The NPMHR further said it wholeheartedly supports the decision of the Naga Hoho to revive the reconciliation process. “NPMHR encourage the sincere and creative internal dialogue amongst all Naga political groups / Naga communities to continue building up clearer understanding of our common vision for the Naga people and Naga homeland.” It has appealed to both parties involved in the peace process to positively take forward steps without delay.
