The Phek District unit of Nagaland Contractors & Suppliers Union (PDNCSU) held a coordination meeting at Hotel Ura, Kohima on October 22.
Exhorting the gathering, Dr Povotso Lohe, Legal Advisor, NCSU emphasised the need for the delivery of works through timely completion, quality workmanship, and compliance with terms and conditions. He also stressed the need to engage the local workforce and maintain transparency and accountability, besides reminding the members that honesty is the best policy.
NCSU Vice President, N Neilo Koza, informed the members that NCSU has nearly 6,000 members, with about 2,200 Class-1 contractors, and emphasized the need for members from PDNCSU to be at par with others.
PDNCSU Advisor, Raruveyi Swuro, called for better participation of members and stressed the need to have better coordination with community leaders, legislators, and officers, adding that the PDNCSU is a non-partisan body.
Delivering presidential address, Kuzhosheyi (Alex) Soho stated that NCSU is the only body that is intact and has representations from all 17 districts of Nagaland. He stressed the need to strengthen the body. Soho expressed concern that many contract and supply works were not executed by members from the district but taken by contractors from other districts, even when there were eligible members from Phek district.
He also highlighted the poor quality workmanship in the execution and construction of the two-lane road under Phek district, with no maintenance and incomplete projects. He expressed concern that many contractors and authorities were not cooperative and warned that PDNCSU would be constrained to take further steps of action.
Pointing out that the CPO and two-lane committee were constituted without a PDNCSU representative, he emphasized the need to have representation in the committee.
Tseibou Khusoh, Secretary, NCSU, commended the PDNCSU for organizing the meeting, expressing hope that it would benefit the district. He stated that many departments are awarding contracts without open tenders and are involved in malpractices. In this regard, he sought cooperation to fight for justice.
Kedoutsolhi Wetsah, Convenor, RTI Cell, NCSU also delivered short speech while Medovelo Sono presented General Secretary report. The meeting was chaired by Esther Rhakho, Women Coordinator, PDNCSU.
