Participants of the walkathon marking National Road Safety month in Phek on January 25
Kohima, January 25 (MExN): The Phek District Police in collaboration with NHIDCL on Monday observed the 32nd National Road Safety month at Phek town.
A 'walkathon' was organised to spread the awareness of safety driving and measures to reduce vehicle accidents, with the participation of public leaders, DTO officials, Police, NCC cadets and students.
Delivering the keynote address, Phek Superintendent of Police Vesupra Kezo said the major causes of accidents were over speeding, wrong lane driving and drunk driving.
He said that a ‘Good Samaritan’ who renders his help to an injured persons or persons in distress on the road is protected under law, and as such, urged everyone to lend a helping hand and save lives.
Several traffic policemen were awarded for the service, on the occasion.
The Kutsapo Village Council which had displayed yeoman service by retrieving a fallen truck through mass participation of the villagers using traditional ropes and equipments were awarded with a certificate of appreciation and a gift.
A quiz competition also marked the occasion and winners were awarded with cash prizes. At the end of the programme, the particpants took a pledge to practice safe driving.
RT Chang, Addl. SP Phek chaired the programme while ASI Zavekho Vero (RO) explained about the Motor Vehicles Act, Traffic Rules and penalties.
