Pilot survey on bamboo resources to be taken up

Kohima, March 20 (MExN): A workshop on Bamboo resources of Nagaland was conducted by Resource Organisation on Jhum and Biodiversity (ROJB) at the Conference Hall, Forest Office Complex, New Minister’s Hill Kohima on March 19.

A brief introduction was given by Lhinghoikim Touthang, State Silviculturist and CEO ROJB. Welcome address was delivered by Supongnukshi Project Director (HRD) NFMP who also gave an introduction on the importance of bamboo as a resource and the need of workshops and training in order to develop the bamboo resources of Nagaland.

He also spoke on how Nagaland can play a crucial role in meeting the requirements for bamboo products in the country, stressing on the huge potential Nagaland holds when it comes to bamboo industry development.

However, in order to start off, field information and survey of different bamboo products, its availability and necessity for market linkage need to be studied so as to implement policies according to the survey, he shared.

A presentation on how to collect field data using GPS, which will act as the base line data for initial survey, and how to obtain the photographs, so as to help the experts identify the various bamboo species was presented by the GIS Team, NFMP.

A brain storming session along with all the field officers present was held where discussions on how to go about was held and it was concluded that a pilot village (Mongsenyimti village) under Mokokchung District for initial survey/study and implementation process so as to help standardize the format / template for data collection will be taken up after which the actual work should be initiated.
