DIMAPUR, AUGUST 19 (MExN): The main accused involved in the reported rape and subsequent murder of a girl on July 21 last fell into the dragnet of the police on August 18. The accused, one Beto Zhimomi (21 years) was tracked down by investigators at a location in 4th Mile.
The victim, twenty-year old Avinuo was reportedly raped and then murdered by the accused in the early morning hours of July 21 at Kirha village, 3rd Mile and absconded. It occurred at the victim’s room. Accused Zhimomi is a neighbor of the victim, police said.
Absconding accused nabbed
The breakthrough was made possible following a tedious and well planned investigation led by SDPO, Dimapur Shouka Kakheto, OC Diphupar Police station Among Jamir, ASI Yawao Konyak, and the investigation officer of the case ASI Inaka Kinimi. The Additional Superintendent of Police, Dimapur Wati Jamir at a media briefing today said that the recovery of the victim’s mobile handset which went missing after the crime proved crucial.
According to the Additional SP, the investigation began with almost no clue or evidence, with investigators detaining various suspects for interrogation without nay positive outcome. Thus, the focus of the investigation shifted towards the recovery of the missing mobile phone of the victim. “The handset was recorded to have been used immediately after the crime by some unknown mobile numbers and accordingly police began a tedious job of studying piles of Call Records Details and location determination of these numbers” by tracking its ‘International Mobile Equipment Identity’ or IMEI (unique identity number found in all mobile sets). It eventually bore fruit.
The handset was recovered from the possession of one non-local mechanic, who claimed that he bought it from one local acquaintance of his. That person was also traced, who again claimed that he had bought the handset from another person.
The accused was finally tracked down on August 18. Initially, he tried to misguide investigators but broke down when the SIM (card) number used in the victim’s handset immediately after the crime was found in his possession.
Contrary to earlier speculations, only one person was involved in the crime. According to the official police report the victim and the accused were known to each other. On the night prior to the incident, the accused visited the victim in an intoxicated state and they are said to have spent more than two hours together during which they had a misunderstanding. The accused in a fit of rage grabbed a wooden plank and hit the victim on the head mortally wounding her. Thereafter, he fled the scene taking alongwith him some cash and the girl’s mobile handset. The crime took place in the morning hours of July 21. Confirmation whether rape was committed, which the accused claimed otherwise, is awaited. Investigators are awaiting the final forensic test report.
Dimapur Police, meanwhile, thanked the various organizations and concerned citizens for the cooperation rendered and patience shown in the course of the investigation.
