The Assam-Nagaland border witnessed a minor standoff on August 19 rising apprehension of a spillover effect of the eviction drive by the Assam government in Golaghat bordering Wokha district. The alleged standoff occurred between Assam Police personnel and residents of Renthan, a village in Wokha district located on the border with Golaghat.
Sources citing local residents said that it occurred around noon, on Tuesday, while Renthan villagers were inspecting alleged erection of fencing and tree plantations, by the Assam government, which allegedly encroached into village land. The allegation was that the Assam government has begun fencing the evicted area, and planting trees on the cleared land.
Assam Police personnel, stationed in the area, allegedly pointed their weapons on the unarmed villagers resulting in the standoff. The situation was however defused with the intervention of border officials from both districts.
The sources informed that the Golaghat Police has taken cognisance of the alleged confrontational act, and will be initiating departmental inquiry against the erring personnel.
