Pollution Control Board contributes more to state

Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) today launched its 2nd phase Demo Project on Solid Waste Management under Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at Chaü Parking Lot, Science College road with NKVIB chairman Dr. Nicky Kire as the Chief Guest. Under the initiative of Nagaland Pollution Control Board, KMC has added hearse truck and Bio-medical waste for the first time, and a tipper making it total 8 tippers for the state capital. 

Speaking at the launching programme, Dr Kire expressed heartfelt gratitude to the NPCB for their contribution to the state. Recalling the mass social works and tree plantations, organized by various groups, Dr. Kire regretted that people fail to give importance hence the same situation is seen around the next day. Refreshing the importance of sanitation, Dr. Kire said it should start right from young age as the taught habit continues till old age. He also said that All Nagaland Teachers Association and NBCC should also initiate in educating the children on cleanliness. Dr. Kire also suggested that users should pay nominal fee for so that people might realize the importance of sanitation.

Member secretary, NPCB Rusovil John, in his keynote address said the first phase of the project was launched in the year 2006 and the execution of the second phase has been delayed due to difficulties in suitable landfill site besides others. Emphasizing on the management of Bio-Medical waste to be dumped along with the general waste into the community bins he also said the practice is very unhygienic and hazardous method and therefore it has to be done away with the rules laid down are to be enforced. According to John, CPCB, Ministry of Environment of India would fund 90% of the project where KMC would be the implementing body with the technical support from the NPCB, Dimapur, since the project is the first of its kind, its success becomes all the more crucial, in order to set good example to the people. He also appealed for concreted efforts from all concerned, vehicle assuring to offer job at its best with sincerity and commitment to see the project materializes.

Kohima deputy commissioner Beiu Angami in his short speech said in order to achieve the goal, he insisted that lower status people should be checked and treated people as they are very important who constantly clears off the dirt in the city. Toshimanen Ao, joint director, ULB cell, urban development also said that education on civic sense needs to be carry out and called upon the people to have sense of responsibility. Kuolachalie Seyie, KMC advisor in his brief address stated the second phase of Solid Waste Management emphasis on Bio-medical Waste, while considering the topography of Kohima weighing practically KMC is going for deep burial of Bio-Medical waste while medicines are separated and burnt in a chimney located at the slaughtering house site on NH-39 Kohima. The programme was chaired by ADC & KMC administrator Alun Hangsing.
