The Dimapur Naga Students' Union (DNSU) reminded the state government to prioritise the inquiry into the fraudulent Indigenous Inhabitant certificate and land-grab allegation pending against a prominent Dimapur-based businessman.
Earlier in June, this year, the DNSU made a controversial revelation against one businessman– Nirmal Jain, alleging Jain of fraudulently acquiring Indigenous Inhabitant certificate and carrying out illicit land transfer deals in the state.
It was followed up with the Dimapur district administration assuring of a comprehensive investigation into the allegation in response to a representation submitted by the DNSU.
On July 14, the DNSU issued a 15-day ultimatum to the district administration urging fast-tracking of the investigation and bringing to the public domain the findings of the inquiry. It also demanded immediate cancellation of all indigenous certificates and properties allegedly fraudulently possessed by Jain.
More than a month since the ultimatum, the DNSU held that no concrete action or result has been made. Addressing a press conference, in Dimapur, on August 22, DNSU General Secretary, Michael Kath, lamented that the steps taken by the government has been limited to issuing show-cause notice. Meanwhile, Jain reportedly left the state citing health concerns.
“Enough is enough. We cannot wait any longer. We call upon the public to be prepared,” said Kath, while asserting that the union will pursue the matter, and take “unprecedented action, if necessary.”
DNSU President, Hinoto P Aomi refused to divulge the course of action they would take, while stating that it will be let known in due course of time.
“If we do not pursue this issue, we will also be answerable to the Nagas,” said Aomi. According to him, the DNSU has obtained evidence substantiating their allegation against Jain, and urged the government to thoroughly investigate.
He maintained that if Jain claims innocence then he must prove it. If not, he added that the government must cancel the Indigenous Inhabitant certificate issued to Jain, and reclaim the lands allegedly acquired by him illicitly.
The Chakhesang Students’ Union Dimapur, Dimapur Rengma Students’ Union and Ao Students’ Union Dimapur endorsed the DNSU’s demand, while jointly calling for unflinching public support.
