Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said that the Industrial Revolution was yet to make its mark on Nagaland due to deficiencies in various quarters. He has challenged the youth to step forward and make a difference. Stressing on the need to take up industries and commerce with seriousness, Rio said “no country can survive without agriculture” and that to attain prosperity, industry  and commerce was very much needed. Inaugurating the new office building of the Directorate of Industries & Commerce here this morning, Rio said “we have to be industrialized.”

Stating that the Industries & Commerce department is a key player in generation of activities and providing conducive atmosphere for trade and commerce, Rio said youths should step forward and avail the opportunities provided by the government to take up self-employment and entrepreneurship. In the case of Nagaland, he said, most youths look for government job whereas in advanced countries people hardly look for jobs in the government sector but give much importance to entrepreneurship. He said that the time has come for the people to change their mindsets and attitudes and move progressively. A time has come to think collectively and not individually in order to usher in development in the state, he said.

Referring to capacity-building, he said it is time for Naga youths to grab the opportunity provided by the government. In the competitive market, he  said, everyone has to be trained and upgraded in knowledge. The DAN government has focused much of its formative years on infrastructural development and there have been significant changes in the landscape of the state in just few years, he said. Everyone should make conscious efforts to maintain these infrastructural assets, Rio added.

Rio informed that the Government of India is setting up 2 Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in Nagaland the first of their kinds in the northeast region. The two SEZs are the Multi Product Special Economic Zone and Agro Food Processing Special Economic Zone. Rio said that the department of Industries & Commerce will change the social and economic landscape of the state and it should gear up for success in the two ventures.

Also, Minister for Urban Development & Higher Education, Dr. Shürhozelie in his speech said an industry is a system of economic development. Highlighting the Industrial Revolution, he said Nagaland has raw materials and natural resources which are yet to be explored. He said industrial planning should be more on genetic lines with more use of human intervention. He urged the department of Industries & Commerce to work in tandem with local entrepreneurs.
