Proposed ‘facilitators’ experts in conflict resolution

DIMAPUR: ‘Kreddha’ means ‘to place trust’. This Indo-European word is derived from ‘Kerd’ (heart), the root word of ‘concord’, which means agreement, harmony, friendship and peace, as well as treaty, accord, truce and settlement. Confirming that the non-profit organization led by a council of eminent persons from all parts of the world would ‘facilitate’ in the Indo-Naga talks, Kraibo Chawang, Deputy MIP Kilonser of the NSCN (IM) told The Morung Express that Michael C van Walt Praag, former UNPO general secretary would be a part of the Kreddha team.

The Council’s purpose is to help prevent and resolve intrastate conflicts by applying the knowledge and experience of eminent men and women who have successfully addressed similar issues worldwide, as well as using their personal connections. The need for the council’s participation in the talks by providing valuable input arises as the NSCN (IM) feels that there is a ‘deadlock’ in the peace parleys.

Kreddha’s approach is based on the experience that a meaningful contribution in matters involving intrastate conflicts is possible only on the basis of: a profound understanding of both/all parties involved; and trust of the parties, based on their belief that there is a true understanding of their interests, concerns, fears and aspirations within the facilitating organization and its teams of experts.

It may be mentioned that during the second day of talks on December 17, representatives of the Dutch non-profit organisation Kreddha, the third party in question, briefed the Indian negotiators on their proposals for taking the Naga peace process forward.

“When I talked of third party mediation, I meant experts who are willing to share their ideas with us. I did not mean that official third party mediation had been accepted by India or by us. The experts whose ideas we invite will not play any official role,” NSCN supremo Thuingaleng Muivah had earlier said to The Telegraph. The contingent of the outfit’s officials who had earlier left for Bangkok will be arriving at Nagaland on December 20.
