Dimapur | April 10
Realising that relying on government to do everything will not bring any change, the residents of Lake View Colony in Dimapur have been toiling hard since April 9, to relocate and install the colony’s power transformer. On April 8 around 5:00 pm, the transformer was damaged and it prompted the residents to take initiative for the welfare of the colony.
Earlier the electricity transformer was located in a low lying area and during monsoon the area gets flooded, which damaged the transformer every now and then, disrupting power supply. The residents had appealed the power department to relocate the transformer but no action was taken so far.
The chairman of the colony Chubanukshi said that officials of the department had assured them that proposals have been sent to “Kohima” but no response to their demands have been received till date.
However, on April 9, several officials of the Electrical department visited the spot and appreciated the colony residents for their effort. Also, the residents are grateful to the officials for the visit and assisting workers in repairing the transformer.
The power tapping problem
The chairman also disclosed that most of the residents in Duda Colony in Assam illegally tap power, one of the reasons why there are frequent disruptions in power supply. He lamented that the present power transformer can hold only up to 250 Kilo Watt.
Supporting the chairman’s statement an irate resident of the colony said: ‘...they are in Assam and they have no right to steal Nagaland’s power supply.”
Concerning the same issue, the GB of the colony Meren Yaden said the residents will take their “own course of action”, if the department do not take action against violators immediately.
He also said that it is also affecting the government’s revenue since ‘they tap power illegally’ and bills are not being paid.
The Good Samaritan
The chairman said one Mamito Rio, resident of the colony, a first class government contractor, donated materials to build a platform for the power transformer. He said residents are very grateful to Mamito for the gesture.
