Mon, December 29 (MExN): A peaceful protest against the shifting of Longshen EAC Hq was organised at Longshen Town from 8:00 am onwards on December 27 last. The protest was jointly initiated by Longshen Town Students’ Union (LTSU), Longshen Town Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (LT-KNSK), Goan Buras Board and Longshen Town Council.

During the rally, LTSU officials in a press release stated that the ‘reminder note’ was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mon through EAC Longshen Hq.

According to the union, even after press releases issued by the Goan Buras Board Longshen (November 21, 2021), Tangnyu Village Council (September 28, 2021) and Sheanghah Chingnyu Village Council (October 1, 2021) were published in local dailies against the shifting EAC Hq, “Government of today still seemed silent and less bothered without any positive response.”

It alleged that the ideas of shifting the town are based on the “vested interest of some selfish individuals, and not the consensus of the denizens of Longshen town and the original land owners (Tangnyu and Sheanghah Chingnyu Village).” It also mentioned that “Mon District Administration has not given any prior information or public notification regarding the shifting of Longshen EAC Hq.”

Further, it reminded the Government that ‘Longshen town after its inception has reached the milestone of 41 years, and currently inhabited by 103 households with a rising population of 557 people.’ It has also government and non-governmental establishments viz., EAC Hq, Forest Department, Dispensary, 33KV power Sub-station, GPS, GMS, etc and various NGOs like Longshen Town Students Union (LTSU), Longshen Town Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (LT-KNSK) and Konyak Union (KU) Longshen Unit.

“Therefore, shifting of such prominent town would amount to loss for both parties (Government and inhabitants), in the form of massive displacement and loss of identities and properties. In this regard, the very idea of shifting the town is totally absurd and irrational and for which we strongly oppose to it,” it stated.

It also added that further, in delaying the process, if any misunderstandings or untoward incidents arise, the government will solely be held responsible. Anticipating for a positive outcome, the organisations have reminded the authority to intervene in the matter at the earliest possible.
