‘A Question of Ownership’

Phek Government College, Barkweaver Publications host workshop

Phek, November 22 (MExN): A one-day international workshop on the theme, ‘A Question of Ownership’ was organised and conducted by Phek Government College in partnership with Barkweaver Publications, Norway at its recently renovated Amphitheatre on November 21.

The resource person, Dr. Easterine Kire, renowned author and poet, acquainted the gathering with the importance of collecting information about our rich heritage, culture and custom from native scholars and their works rather than referring books by foreign authors. She laid further emphasis on the matter by paraphrasing that the participants of a culture alone knows their own tradition, history and identity better than any other person. She also dwelled on the many iconic institutions of the Nagas, such as the Log Drums, Village Gates, Male Dormitories, etc., which in itself holds a wealth of stories, meanings and significance and the need to protect them from intellectual theft by outsiders.

Dr. Easterine Kire lamented that the younger generation are letting Nagamese and other languages seep into our daily life and replacing our native language. She also considered the multilingual aspect of the Naga society a blessing for the diversity it brings with it.

Earlier during the workshop, Dr. Vizovol Mekro, Principal, PGC, delivered the keynote address and welcomed the resource person while Asst. Prof. Dr. I Koktiba Sangtam, Department of Political Science, and Convenor of Research and Seminar Committee, gave the vote of thanks. The workshop was chaired by Dr. Atoholi, Asst. Prof. Department of Chemistry. The seminar also highlighted a variety of cultural shows by the students.
