Heavy rainfall has triggered fresh landslides along Phesama sinking area of National Highway-2 on Wednesday, disrupting traffic movement along Kohima-Mao section.
Some stranded HMVs were allowed to pass at around 3: 00 PM today.
However, this route closed for the night due to continuous debris slides and machineries deployed at the site for active clearance.
All LMVs have been diverted towards Phesama-Kisama/Kigwema via Rhododendron Resort for both way traffic, according to DSP (Traffic) Kohima, Solevi Metha.
No heavy vehicle movement possible, according to Kohima district administration.
PS Pandey, Deputy General Manager (Nature Division) NHIDCL told the visiting media persons that continuous sliding has been occurring over the last three to four days in the sinking area
Our teams have been clearing debris on a daily basis, Pandey said.
He said that temporary protective measures have been implemented at nearby vulnerable locations, but falling boulders and fresh slides continue to pose challenges.
"We have already prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the entire Kohima–Mao stretch, and it is in the final stage. Permanent solutions for all sinking and sliding zones will be included in the DPR," he said.
A driver of a bus stranded at the sinking area this morning thanked the benevolent gesture of Phesama village for arranging food to the passengers.
Meanwhile, the district administration through social media handle has stated that the traffic have been cleared near Dzudza river and also at Liezocha & Kezanu along NH- 2 at 9: 00 AM.
