Dimapur, September 30 (MExN): Block level awareness campaign on control of animal diseases with special reference to avian influenza was conducted by the district veterinary & AH office, Dimapur on September 29. DVO Dimapur, Dr. VH Shohe in a press note informed that two representatives from 10 villages in each blocks of Medziphema, Niuland, Dhansiripar and Kuhuboto attended the camp.
Dr. Simon Ao, deputy director of Vety Hospital, Dimapur speaking on animal diseases of economic importance informed that the outbreak of FMD in Dimapur occurs starting from July, peaking in the month of August and September. Ranikhet and chronic respiratory disease in poultry normally are reported starting from July and most of the major deaths occurring in the month of September, October and March month of the year. Swine fever is prevalent almost throughout the year in Dimapur although the highest mortality occurs in the month of July and August.
Therefore, it is advisable to vaccinate cattle and buffaloes against FMD, SF vaccine in swine and RD vaccine in domestic poultry preferably starting from towards the end of February till April. Emphasising on threat posed by the deadly Bird Flu (H5NI) disease in the region basing the recent outbreak in Dhubri district in Assam, the preventive measures were discussed during the campaign and thereby sensitizing the villagers on the role of timely reporting involving the village representatives.
DVO Dimapur, Dr VH Shohe requested the village representatives to sensitize the remaining villagers and also to report any unusual death among domestic poultry to the nearest veterinary outpost or administrative personal.
